Headshots are essential in the professional world, Everyone should have a good headshot. A lot of us make tons of Headshot mistakes.... This a list of the Biggest Headshot Mistakes we see.
Biggest Headshot Mistakes
- Using a shot that is unprofessional. College is over stop using shots that are designed for your buddies and not someone who'd potentially hire you. HR managers and headhunters are searching for you on the internet and making decisions based off a picture on social media or linked in.
- Your headshot is too old. Too many of us use headshots that are a bit old. I've done it too, we might have been skinnier, bigger, or have way different hair. Your headshot needs to look like you now. Update it every 2 years.
- Your headshot makes you look like a fish out of water. This is a one of the biggest headshot mistakes. People have a photo of them doing something that has NOTHING to do with their brand or the personal brand they want to represent. If you're an attorney, it's great that you love hunting but your picture should be more about you in front of the court house.
- Your headshot isn't great for your profession. If you used to be a doctor but you're a comedian now... you probably know it isn't the best headshot to use on your comedian poster.
- You aren't using a headshot. You can use other shots that may actually be your personal brand, such as a picture of you and your newborn son, or your wife, or a family picture. However using a picture that isn't a headshot or promo style shot you aren't conveying the Message you are looking for.
- Too many People in the pic. A lot of folks will put a group picture up, and this can confuse people on who is actual the person they are looking for. Some of us do it when we have family it's obvious who "steve" is in the photo.
- Your Headshot doesn't add value. If it's not adding value to your profile it's the wrong pic. Too many folks don't understand that your pic needs to add value to you, your brand, and your profile... or its taking value away.
- Taken on a phone. There isn't anything wrong with having a headshot of you temporarily being done with a phone, you can take a very good shot with a phone with a good understanding of lighting. It's important you understand how a professional head shot creates separation between you and others just in perception. If you want to be taken seriously long term, get yourself a professional headshot.
- Bad Lighting. Lighting conveys a message, it can be bright or dark, both have purposes. In the corporate world bright light is best. It conveys good and you have nothing to hide. Good light doesn't mean looking into the sun.
Conclusion
You can take a great headshot on a phone, but it shouldn't be forever. You should use a good photographer because the lens, lighting, and craft will help you convey your brand and send the message you want to send to people... Stop making big Headshot mistakes.
